The Tipping Point Workshop

Energise your Change Makers and equip them with powerful insights, knowledge and tools

The Tipping Point Workshop is an acclaimed learning workshop that helps change leaders, change makers and change agents to achieve more, more effectively, more cost-effectively and faster.
Also known as the 'Change, Dialogue and Action Workshop', it achieves highly effective learning in an engaging, action-based way that respects and draws upon participants' knowledge and experiences but encourages a fresh look at what works, what doesn't and why. The Workshop is a leading example of the power of gamification - if we can make learning a fun, challenging, collaborative experience, participants will learn more and do more with what they have learned. The ingenious Tipping Point computer simulation is at the heart of the Workshop. It presents a holistic framework for implementing change and provides a powerful experiential learning opportunity as participants use the simulation to test-out different change strategies in a safe learning environment.
Time For Change can arrange delivery of this great learning experience for small or large groups, or can train and accredit you or your colleagues as workshop facilitators so that you can add the Tipping Point Workshop to your toolkit.

If change is to be implemented effectively in your organisation, there are key people who will make the difference between success and failure. They need the learning that the Tipping Point Workshop can provide.

Some of these people are senior leaders whose sponsorship, attitudes and involvement will be vital; others are hands-on planning, implementing and leading actions that are intended to make the change happen. These people's attitudes and decisions will make or break your organisation's efforts to change. These people need the insights that the Tipping Point Simulation can help them to discover. They need to understand why a frighteningly-high proportion of change initiatives fail. They need to know which commonly-used approaches tend to multiply the costs of change projects while proving to be not only ineffective but actually counter-productive.

The workshop is highly engaging and enjoyable, which is a key to its success as a learning opportunity. Working in a small team, you design your approach to an organisational change by operating 7 'levers of change' in a carefully-selected combination that you believe will be a winning fomula. The simulation is hard to please, it's based on the best change theories and the hard-won experience of that rare breed - people and organisations who have really mastered change. What will it make of your strategy? Will it chew it up and spit it out? Will it show it to be like so many real change projects in real organisations - slow, over-budget and ultimately unsuccessful? Or will your approach knock spots off those of the other small teams in your workshop? Whichever way it goes, there will be some profound learning on offer - learning which can help your key people to plan and implement better, faster, less expensive and more successful changes from now on.

The Tipping Point simulation is based on the Seven Levers of Change. Helping your management team to fully understand these seven levers and their effects, alone and more importantly in combination, can help them to more effectively shape and support future changes. Helping your operational-level change leaders, change makers and change agents to gain the same insights can transform their ability to deliver change successfully, on-time and within budget.

The Change, Dialogue, and Action workshop is experiential and interactive. Teams have been known to spontaneously stand up and cheer as their strategy unfolds in the simulation. Participants debate vigorously during the simulation runs about trade‐offs and costs. After using the simulation, participants can immediately apply what they have learned to a current change initiative facing their organisation, and make real progress - in real time.

What to expect

An overview of the Tipping Point theory, and the seven levers of change.

Experimentation with the factors that affect change, using an interactive computer simulator.

Focused dialogue with teammates to create a shared and common vision of how to implement a change.

Practical knowledge to make your organisational change both contagious and sustainable.

To have some fun while gaining some valuable insights.

Who should attend?

Change, Dialogue, Action works best with 15-35 people. These can be a cross-section of people affected by the change or an intact team. It can also work with smaller groups, or groups from two or more organisations can be combined. It is always good to include:

Change sponsors

Day-to-day leaders who are planning a new change or engaged in a current change effort

Managers who want to increase buy-in and commitment, to deal better with apathy or resistance

Internal Organisational Development or Human Resources staff

Teams responsible for leading a change initiative

Individuals who want a holistic understanding of change management.

How long does it take?

In a half-day workshop, participants use the simulator to experience and understand the concepts in the Tipping Point model. After the half-day workshop, participants have a robust understanding of the interactions and feedback inherent in implementing change.

In a full-day Workshop, the second half-day allows participants to apply what they have learned to a real-life change initiative, and create action items for success. This full-day approach is highly recommended.

“The Workshop has provided a practical tool for managing our change… a refreshing and pragmatic approach.”

Karen Dickinson Learning and Development Manager, Sheffield Health and Social Care Trust

Time For Change is the first point of contact for arranging delivery of a Tipping Point Workshop for you, your colleagues or your clients; and also the global hub for training trainers (change leaders, consultants, organisational development practitioners) as facilitators of the Tipping Point Workshop.

The Tipping Point Workshop, and the Change Management Simulator at its heart, was developed by Dr Andrea Shapiro. Time For Change's founder Dr David Yarrow has worked closely with Dr Shapiro since 2004, collaborating on adaptation of the workshop for specific contexts and purposes, and on its ongoing development and improvement.
